Fabric Swatch S.O.S.!

S.O.S. Help! I find myself in a quandary. We’ve lived in our dream home for almost four years and the decorating is still not finished. (Gasp!!) That isn’t the problem though. The dilemma is that I’m now sick of the color scheme I chose years ago, shades of gold, rich red accents, and browns for the first floor.  This last year I started moving into cooler shades of blues and sandy naturals for the second level. Attempting to mesh the two color schemes has been difficult, so today the search for a fabric that could meld the warmth of gold with the soft, watery blues began. Here are some fabric swatches that might work found on Fabric.com.

I’d like to mix in more modern prints with my existing traditional choices. Never trust your computer monitor to give you accurate color images. I’ll have to order swatches to be completely sure before deciding. Below are the colors on the lower level; walls painted in SW Ivoire, SW Blonde, SW Meadowlark, and crimson accents and fabrics. These colors don’t really look very accurate on my monitor either…oh well.

Grain Sack Dish Towel Valance (1024x744)

The upstairs color scheme is painted in SW Sea Salt, SW Rainwashed, BM Atmospheric, and SW Urban Putty. The kids rooms are bright and fun colors chosen by them and no way am I about to attempt to blend in their schemes!!

The red is the problem I’ve decided. The red is in the drapes, furniture,  rugs, and artwork. Little touches are everywhere, so eliminating red completely is just not in the budget.  I need a fabric that would incorporate golds, blues, and a teeny touch of the red, but I can’t find one.

If you know of a fabric pattern that’ll accomplish that PLEASE share it with me!!

I’d also love to hear where you love to find your fabrics!

Kim

  1. Love the fabric choices - I have the same issue. Lots of reds in my family room but never had blue. Then I found 2 amazing 60's club chairs in blue velvet. Was going to reupholster them and they sat in basement waiting. I brought them up to see where to put them and decided the blue looked good with everything else. They are in my living room with a white sofa and lots of green, brown, and a red pillows. So in my family room, I found 2 big pillows with reds, browns and a touch of orange for my beige sofas with a red chair and ottoman. I am on the lookout for orange/blue pillows for the living room now to tie it all together. Can't wait to see what you go with.

    1. Pillows might just have to be a solution... right now, all my pillows are in solids. Thanks for sharing how you made your room work! I appreciate it!

  2. Those colors and fabrics are calling my name! I've been transitioning our living room from green, red, and gold to more beachy hues for a while now. Thankfully the red was confined to the drapes and the pillow covers. The drapes are long gone and I've been looking for fun fabric to recover the pillows with. I love your choices!

For smaller projects, I look at my local thrift store for clothing items that can be converted into a pillow cover, table runner, etc. I like to mix my thrifty fabric finds with nicer remnants from local fabric stores {or the usual online suspects}.

    Good luck on your search!

  3. We're in a really similar situation. There is a lot I love about my current decor (and I never felt like I've finished it yet either), but I'm so drawn to more modern fabrics and colors. I'm trying to figure out how to blend the two. I've got lots of red, too. I'll be curious to see what your do!

  5. I love your color choices! I, too, had this problem, including two wingback chairs that I had reupholstered in a red fabric. They were definitely not going anywhere, so I had to get creative to change up for more blues. I finally saw the same color combo one day in a Pottery Barn magazine and started to collect items to work with the blue/red that I wanted. My walls are a soft blue, I have neutral drapes, and the red chair has remained as an accent. I'm still not done, but I'm LOVING the red/blue combo and I have pops of it everywhere downstairs. I'm no expert but it can be done! And, I don't really have any fabric ideas for you, but I always look at tablecloths, sheets, and duvet covers on clearance wherever I shop for great fabric alternatives; I've found some gems this way. FYI: I ordered a swatch of that Premier Print Paisley Chocolate a while back and the green in it is quite limey, making the whole fabric just a bit bright, not as soft as depicted on the monitor.

    1. Thanks Lauren! I thought the paisley print was a gold color, not a lime green!! It just shows you how distorted monitor colors be...grrrrr. I'm glad to know that about the swatch though! I had seen a fabric in PB too awhile back, but it's not available anymore. I knew I should have jumped on it when I had the chance.

  6. Richloom Cornwall Garden is a pretty suzani with cream, gold, red, teal and green.

Pop Garden Pop Daisey Red is a bold floral with red, yellow, brown, lime, ivory and turquoise... really cute.

Also.... check out tonicliving.com. They have some great retro and vintage inspired fabrics that incorporate the colors you're looking for.

  7. I am sure whatever you decide it will be stunning, but just a heads up- the premier prints gotcha swatch isn't remotely close to gold. I have 2 pillows in our master from that material and it is a bold corn yellow! ( I do love it tho!) I have also ordered from tonic living.com for swatches. Good luck, can't wait to see it all done up!

    1. Thanks you! The Gotcha 18 colors, one of them is corn yellow too. :) The thumbnail I have above is the Summerland Yellow, which HOPEFULLY is a bit tamer and not too green. I think I just really have to go see these in a store.

  8. Hi Kim. I hope someone has a solution because I have the exact same problem! I haven't checked out all of the comments yet, but I will! Take care.

  9. I just used the first fabric for a friend's window valance and it is GORGEOUS! The repeat is quite large, so it looks great in a larger setting. I'm in the process of changing my warmer burnt orange, gold, and green tones to burnt orange and turquoise (more of a dusty, cooler turquoise). I was able to find pillow fabrics that have the blue in it and said goodbye to the green. Pillows always make such a huge difference in a room!

Can't wait to see what you do!

    1. Hi Michelle! I love it too, but I'm not sure it will work on a small valance. I went to the fabric store and the repeat is HUGE, I'm talking GI-NORMOUS! I'm having to re-think my choices now. Sorry :(
