Valentine Wreath {Felt Flower Tutorial}

Valentines Day is just around the corner. So I thought I’d join the felt flower craze seen everywhere, and make a Valentine Wreath using felt flowers and velvet roses. This Valentine wreath was made out of ribbon, felt and velvet, and can be made in a very short amount of time. So if you ever wanted to learn how to make a wreath using felt flowers, today’s your day!

Supplies needed to make a Valentine Felt Flower Wreath:

• 16” straw wreath
• 12 yards (3 rolls) of 1.5” ribbon
• 1 roll of .25” solid ribbon
• 1.5 yards of decorative ribbon (like the felt heart ribbon)
• straight pins & hot glue
• two (8x10”) white felt sheets and red velvet scraps.

To make the wreath, pin one end of the wide ribbon into the back of the straw wreath and wrap until the entire wreath is covered. It took 2.75 rolls to cover the 16” wreath. Then wrap your accent ribbons around the wreath, pinning with straight pins to secure. Isn’t that felt heart ribbon adorable?

Wrapping the Valentine wreath only takes a few minutes. Once this step is completed you can start making your felt flowers and velvet roses. I’ve laid out step by step diagrams below for you to follow. Once you’ve made your desired amount of flowers, simply hot glue them to your wreath.

How to Make Felt Flowers

1) Cut a square out of your felt. 2) Then from that square cut a wavy edged circle. No precision needed, just rock your scissors from side to side as you cut. The larger your circle is, the larger your flower will be. 3) Starting from the outside edge, cut a wavy swirl, starting thin then getting wider as you reach the center. 

4) Start rolling the felt. 5) Continue rolling the felt, maintaining a flat base by pressing your thumb along the bottom and index finger holding the center as you wrap. 6) When you near the end, apply a dot of hot glue.

7) Fold the glued flap over and press to secure. 8) Turn the base towards you and (9) cover with hot glue.

10) Fold the end flap over the base and press. 11) While the glue is still hot, press your thumb deep into the flower center. This ensures the center of the spiral gets glued to the base. 12) Fluff and spread over petals and enjoy your felt flower creation! My sister has a great video on how to felt you can check out too!

How to Make Velvet Roses

I had scrap pieces of velvet in my fabric collection. They were leftovers from my bridesmaid dresses we made… 19 years ago!!! The velvet roses are a little more tricky than the felt. My first rose came out terrible! But by the second try, I got the hang of it. The material just doesn’t have much give to it like the felt does and it wants to slip. To make the roses, simply follow the same directions as above. To prevent the centers from slipping out, try adding a tiny amount of hot glue to the bottom edge, every few turns as you wrap. That seemed to help. Also, at the last step you will fold each petal back and spread outward. This step gives the rose a more realistic appearance. Arrange your flowers on your wreath and hot glue them in place. Easy!

To dress up your flowers, hot glue tiny pearls, gems, or beads into the center of each flower and cut some felt leaves and add those to the flower base. Hang the wreath with your left over ribbon, pinning with straight pins to secure. Enjoy your Valentine Felt Flower Wreath!
