Fall Mantel

Is it ok to admit I’m still holding on to summer? Can I tell you how hard it is to decorate for fall when our temps have been in the 80’s? Thankfully, yesterday was the first crisp and cool morning and you could smell a bit of fall in the air. It was a fuzzy slipper kind of morning.  I made myself a steamy pumpkin latte (or two, or three)and then climbed the attic stairs to lug down the autumn bins. Today I’d take it easy and joyfully tackle the Fall Mantel! Why so joyous? Well this mama took her mantel back!

Fall Mantel

I gleefully said “buh-bye” to the big flat screen TV over my mantel! I’ve been working on hubs for years to move it across the room but he refused. One day a few weeks ago he agreed to try a new arrangement! I couldn’t believe it, but quickly got him dismantling the monstrosity sucking up all my lovely mantel space.

If you do have a TV over your fireplace you will want to read my post for helpful design tips on How to Decorate a Mantel Around Your Big TV.

Fall mantel

The hardware that held the TV was still installed on the wall along with the power outlets. It was not pretty and needed either repairing or disguising. So I took an oil rubbed bronze made over mirror from another part of the house and leaned it against the hardware. I actually secured it to the hardware too so it won’t fall. This mantel is 5 feet tall!

Mini wheat stacks from Home Goods flank the sides. One is paired with the oh so delicious smelling Angel Kiss Candle by Goose Creek and a metal “W” initial from Restoration Hardware. A pretty Anjou russet pear rests against the letter.

Fall Mantel

The pear and bittersweet vine motif continues on the other side with a large oil rubbed bronze pear from Target and a bittersweet wreath adorning the mirror. It’s held by a suction cup hook.

Fall Mantel

More bittersweet berry garland suspend under the mantel and are also tucked into a dough bowl filled with heirloom pumpkins and gourds.

Decorating with Dough bowls

When I came across this dough bowl I immediately envisioned it filled with pumpkins! Isn’t is beautiful? I love it!

Dough Bowl Pumpkins

I’m happy with the balance of the decorations, colors, shapes, and textures. The eye keeps moving yet is not overwhelmed with too many items.

  1. I am waiting to have our family room painted this week then I will finally get to decorate our mantle! Love how you decorated your's Kim! The previous owners of our home had a TV mounted above our fireplace too, but we put ours on a TV stand on another wall, as well...Too funny, I have a similar bread bowl too, found mine at Goodwill for a couple of bucks! I couldn't believe it when I saw it sitting on the shelf...at that price was a big score! I would love to start a collection of them. Love the wheat sheafs too!

  3. Beautiful Kim! Congrats on reclaiming the mantle space! ;) I tried the tv over the mantle once, I think it lasted about a week...both my husband and I hated it, it was too high and we were killing our necks! Love the way the dough bowl looks too.

  9. Super pretty and elegant. We use to have a tv in our old house above our gorgeous fireplace and man it was ugly. I feel your pain. Well not anymore though, I don't have that gorgeous mantel or tv over it so I can't complain anymore:) ha.

  10. I have a huge TV over my mantel so I don't really decorate it. I have stone urns on each end but that's it. It's in our family room which honestly, is all about the TV. I love the way your mantel turned out and the dough bowl is to die for. I want one SO SO SO bad. I have never found one I could afford. Great buy on that!

  17. Yippie for taking back your mantel! I just went to a neighbors house who had the hubby's version of the Frazier chair in front of the ginormous tv over the fireplace! She wants it out - he won't hear of it! Glad you won - the mantel never looked better!

  25. Awesome look! You pulled together a nice look and I'm happy for you to have gotten the tv away from the mantel!
We have a large flat panel tv that's off to the side in our room, and it's so much easier to view than way up high like yours was. I had it worse than you though, my room shared my husbands large stereo speakers and it was a huge arm twist to get him to remove them. Love that big dough bowl- those are so nice! I actually saw a local coffee shop at our farmers market displaying food for sale in one of those big bowls. I wanted to ask him if it was for sale but I knew it wouldn't be!
