HGTV Dream Home: Kiawah, S.C. Barrier Island

You’ve filled out your email entry, typed in your contact information each day for a week now. Come on, I know your secret desire. You are hoping to hit the jackpot, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, the 2013 HGTV Dream Home! I have entered this contest for years now and of course I haven’t won, but someone has to, right? This year’s 2013 HGTV Dream Home is located in Kiawah, South Carolina. It is 21 miles south of Charleston. I love barrier islands. We frequent the N.C. barrier islands, like Hatteras Island,  several times a year. The nice feature about barrier islands is the ocean on one side and the marshes and serene sound on the inland side. They offer a mecca of watersport activities, vistas, sunrises, and sunsets that will take your breath away.

Let’s take a sneak peek into the HGTV Dream Home on Kiawah Island.

Sapele mahogany, a naturally rot- and insect-resistant material is used for the front entry way and the deck banisters. It stands up to South Carolina Low Country's hot and humid climate. Driftwood gray shaker shingles cover the home with classic, southern iron lanterns on each side of the door.

Open the door and enter the hall lined with a lengthy sisal rug. This entry way is elegant yet hard-working. The sisal rug protects strand-carbonized bamboo flooring from heavy foot traffic. The entry's pairing of rustic and elegant hints at the home's overall design scheme. Don’t you love the paneled ceilings?

This leads us into the great room where two story windows pour in the natural light and allow for expansive, gorgeous marsh views.

The kitchen is kept modern, clean and simple. Shell covered urns filled with grasses give the kitchen just a touch of coastal flair.

The pantry looks ultra-magazine-chic in this picture, but it does have ample shelf and under the counter space to hold all your pantry and kitchen housewares. Cloth curtains are substituted for cabinet doors.

The dining room serves as the main eating area in this home. The farm house trestle table and upholstered chairs keep a harmonious balance between formal and casual dining. 

The Zen feeling is continued into the master bedroom, where clean lines and a calm pallet serve as the foundation for the moderate living space. Small touches of coastal influence is reflected in the framed sea fan art work and starfish art in the master bath.

A coral specimen wall gallery on the bathroom wall makes a graphic statement.

The girls room is bathed in coastal, sea glass shades of aqua and turquoise and citron.

The boys bunk room reflects a nautical theme, complete with teak boat handles for the bunk ladder and rope drawer pulls.

Gorgeous yellow southern yellow pine timbers frame the 2nd story loft for a dramatic architectural feature.

Take a peek into the guest bath. Nice huh? Crisp, simple and serene is the theme of this home.

You have got to check out this play room off of the garage. The garage is right behind those curtains! Who would have thought it? Lounging day bed and chairs are arranged to watch the big screen TV mounted on the opposite wall and in full view of the ping pong table.

Evening meals are frequently held outside, sheltered from the late afternoon sun. Dine the night away with beautiful marsh views and warm, sultry nights.
