Decorating a Fall Front Porch

Time to decorate the front porch for fall again!

A front porch begs to draw attention and say,“Welcome Friends! Come on in!”.

So gather some colorful mums, bright pumpkins, and ruffled kale and let’s start decorating for fall!

This wreath is an old faithful of mine.

And even though it’s faded and a little weathered from the years of wear, it still brings a smile to my face.

I thought I’d add something new to the wreath, like my last name’s initial.

This will be a simple addition, or so I thought. Since the letter “W” seemed to be very popular (sold out everywhere), I resorted to cutting the letter out of a Styrofoam sheet I had in the garage. Cutting it was rather laborious and took for-e-vah!!! Next I grabbed a can of spray paint. BIG MISTAKE! I was not aware of what happens to Styrofoam when it’s spray painted. Great!  Nothing like watching your craft dissolve in front of your eyes! Now what?

Ta-da!!! This is how I remedied the poor little “W” initial, by wrapping it in sisal twine! Whew! 

The "W” received a light spray in brown and gold and found a new home in the fall wreath.

The local garden center had a great deal on mums, kale, and heirloom pumpkins. Click to see how to decorate an indoor autumn display with green and cream heirloom pumpkins.

What is nice about southeast Virginia, is that the kale will live all winter long and the mums will come back next spring if I plant them in the ground before winter!

Black urns are a new addition this year and were placed on each side of the porch, and filled with the kale, mums and a few small gourds.

The fall front porch is decorated and I’m ready for cooler weather, hayrides, pumpkin carving with the kids, and some hot spiced cider, aren’t you?
