I closed the door behind me, dropped the keys on the table, and sank into my recliner with coffee cup in hand.
Closing my eyes I breathed in deep and exhaled slowly when I was suddenly startled.
Did you hear that?
Shhhh… don’t move… there it is again…
Silence
The sweet, yet deafening silence that occurs on the morning of the first day of school.
My high-schooler, middle-schooler, grade-schooler, and pre-schooler, all bright eyed and bushy tailed (cough-cough),
made it off to their respective establishments of learning.
Mom, in turn relished in the moment of sacred silence until the distant beep of the washing machine awakened me back to the awaiting realities of motherhood…. (sigh).
Trying to be the “cool mom” on the first day of school, I thought making the kids a dinner they’d LOVE would up the coolness-factor.
Ree Drummond, aka The Pioneer Woman wins the “cool mom award” hands down in my book!
Watching her debut on The Food Network, featuring Sliders and Mac n’Cheese, I knew what the night’s meal would be!
They both were a hit! Thank you Ree!
Those sliders disappeared in no time flat.
And to my astonishment, my ears heard that rare phrase escape my children’s mouths…..
“GREAT DINNER MOM!!!”
(Brushing the imaginary dust from my shoulders… coolness factor +1)
Ahhh, momentary success.
But look at that pile of books!
I sense a lot of homework headed MY way.
And so it begins…
