Christmas Present Cupcakes

Tomorrow is already Christmas Eve! This month flew by! Our family will all gather at my mom’s to celebrate. My contribution assignment was a dessert for the kids. I asked my kids what type of Christmas cupcake they wanted and they suggested Christmas Present Cupcakes. These are fun to make and oh so delicious!

How to Make Christmas Present Cupcakes

I used a Devil’s Food cake mix to make the cupcakes. Follow the directions on the box and fill your cupcake liners, and place in oven. In the meantime unwrap 24 holiday chocolate kisses. I had mint truffle and candy cane kisses.

Holiday Kisses

Most cupcakes need to bake around 19 minutes. Five minutes before the cupcakes are done, take them out and gently push in a holiday kiss just until you see the tip. Place them back in the oven and finish the last 5 minutes of baking.

Frost the cupcakes after they cool completely. If you need a good buttercream frosting recipe you can find it on my Christmas Ornament Cupcake post, where I used chocolate kisses in the cupcakes too!

Frosted Cupcakes

After frosting the cupcakes, it’s time to make the presents. Get rice krispie treat bars and cut them in half.

Cut rice krispie treats

Take red candy melts and put them in a bowl and microwave on 30 second intervals until melted. Make sure to stir after each interval, because the candy melts will not lose shape until touched.

Spread the melted candy on each side of the rice krispie square. Smooth the candy with the back edge of the knife and set onto wax paper to set up. I did try dipping the squares in the candy coating, but really didn’t have much success. For smoother looking presents, you could wrap the presents in fondant, but my kids are not big fans of it, even though my recipe is made with marshmallows.

Warm the candy melts in the microwave if the candy in the bowl starts to stiffen up.

The ribbons on the Christmas Present Cupcakes are made out of marshmallow fondant. To make marshmallow fondant I used 10 marshmallows, a few tablespoons of softened butter, 3/4 cup of powdered sugar and a few tablespoons of cornstarch for rolling out the fondant. Butter the inside of a small bowl, place the marshmallows in it along with 3 tablespoons of butter, and microwave for 30 seconds. Stir until smooth and then add the powdered sugar and stir. The marshmallow will come together and stiffen. With buttered hands start to knead the marshmallow. If it is too wet, then add cornstarch until it is smooth and no longer sticky. Sprinkle some cornstarch onto a cutting board and roll out the marshmallow fondant with a rolling pin.

With a sharp knife, cut thin ribbon strips in the fondant. Wrap each present with the fondant ribbon.

To make a fondant bow, simply make tiny loops and pinch together, then gently set on top of the present.

Set the present on top of the frosting and serve! I know my kids, nieces, and nephews will love their Christmas Present Cupcake and be surprised when they find the special chocolate holiday kiss inside!

May you all have a very Merry Christmas!

  6. Supercute idea...thanks for sharing the easily-doable steps!
These would be great for a Valentine's Day party, maybe with caramel-filled Kisses...yummm!
And I suppose, if you used different colors of candy melts, for birthday parties too.
    Cheers!
