Sand and Sisal: Patriotic Platter

Memorial Day passed and I found myself lacking in any patriotic table wear and decorations. Knowing that 4th of July is just around the corner, I jumped into gear and decided to make a Patriotic Platter using Mod Podge and paints by Plaid and some paper products. It’s an easy way to customize any dishware for any occasion!

The folks at Plaid sent me a box of goodies that they are now carrying at the new Walmart Plaid Crafts section and they gave me the challenge of creating something with which ever products I choose! Fun!

Below is a shot of the Plaid section at my local Walmart and I picked up a large glass platter from their housewares section to decorate. I’ve been decorating glass platters using Mod Podge and decorative napkins for over 15 years. I have a whole stack of pretty platters that can be used to display on a wall or stand or used as a serving platter.

How to Mod Podge a Glass Platter

These are the items I used to make this platter:

A 12.5 inch glass platter & star stencil

Mod Podge & flat paint brush by Plaid

Glitter Paint & White Paint by Plaid

Navy scrapbook paper cut into a circle

Decorative dinner napkin

Flip your platter over to the backside. I used a star stencil that came in the alphabet stencil pack by Plaid. Tape the stencil to the plate and paint on a few layers of glitter paint in the star. Allow to dry, then paint on a layer of white paint and carefully remove the stencil before the paint is dry.

Once the star is completely dry, paint on a thick layer of Mod Podge over the center of the plate and place your scrapbook paper circle, print side down, over the center. Smooth out any air bubbles gently. And now put another layer of Mod Podge over the backside of the paper.

Open up a large, decorative, paper dinner napkin and cut it into pieces that will fit around the edges of your platter. Working in sections, paint Mod Podge onto the glass edges and apply the napkin piece and gently smooth. Repeat this until all edges of the platter are covered.

Coat the entire back side of the platter with Mod Podge, smoothing out any air bubbles with your brush. Allow it to dry completely. Trim the excess napkin from the edges of the platter with an exacto-blade.

Your Patriotic Platter is ready to be used! How do you clean it though, you ask? Just wipe it down with a wet, but not soaking sponge and dry thoroughly. Avoid immersing the platter in water.
